Treasure Island Fun Run/Walk

The Popich’s first Treasure Island Fun Run/Walk brought together 150 runners, walkers, and even more to help out, watch out and enjoy the fun.   Walter and Jaunie’s granddaughters, Julia Bamba and Cindy Popich were the driving force behind this event and (most generous gift to so many); and their mother, Chris Popich writes,

“The Popich family would like to thank everyone for participating and a big thank you to those who raised and donated extra money for this event.  Over $2,400 will be donated to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.  Congratulations to the winners in each of the categories.  We thought it was a huge success for the first year and are looking forward to this being an annual event.”

Also remarkable is that this success is from a first-time effort. The Popich’s report the following winners and their impressive prizes in the different categories:

 3 Mile Run:

Male 18 + - John Flett (20.02) - golf game for 4 with golf cart

Male under 18 - Peter Flett (20.21) – signed John Olerud baseball

Female - Danacia Jones (20.40) designer towel and backpack

3 Mile Walk:

   Male Winner - Wayne Anderson

   Female Winner - Carol Moe

1.5 Mile Walk:

   Male Winner - Josh Bianchi

   Female Winner - Jackie Longmire

Family Walk – David Graunke Family

The Popich Family is targeting this annual run every year on the Saturday which is closest to July 4th (but never on the holiday, because there’s our parade to get ready for). Look for them next summer wearing the next great Treasure Island T-shirt which they designed for us.   Let’s plan to help them sell even more shirts and increase all the numbers  - of runners, participants, donors, volunteer help, cheering spectators, and of course final check to the “Hutch” – as we know we can.

 President Gary Longmire, 275-2397

Secretary/Treasurer Linda Pryor 275-2253

Vice-President (dock) Lowel Mahugh 275-8135

Yvonne Wilson  275-5097

Boardmembers Burton Appelo (Beach), Margaret Clary (Water Manager), and Jim Bruno (Bridge) are now completing the terms of these offices for which we’re about to elect new boardmembers to serve.  Replacements won’t be known until after our annual meeting soon.  Special thanks now to these last two hard-working and seasoned contributors, Burton and Margaret, who leaving the board for now while continuing to care for and serve our community in other ways.

Our TICC Secretary, Linda Pryor, said she has copies of our current TICC Homeowners’ Directory for us; so just let her know if you need an updated list.

                                                   VOLUNTEERS

The board and Treasure Chest can’t help but notice and recognize the work that simply gets done all around us, by us, and for us.  Keeping a complete list of who got what done is an enormous and impossible task - which doesn’t keep our TICC board from trying - and so here are more volunteering contributors to mention:

Wayne Anderson, Ginger Appelo, Burrell Baker, Dick Benson, Pam Berger, Jodie Callahan, Dave Dickinson,  Mary Drennan,  Ben & Mary Forman, Elaine Frigone,  Dave Hare,  Madonna and Him Henwood, Judy Ivanovich, Jack McLaughlan,  Doris Mealey,  Mark Oberle,  John Parks,  Rodger and Darrell Pryor,  Al & Pat Richmond,  Bill Schroeder,  Wes Stock, Bob Swinburne,  Chuck Wetzel,  Nancy Whitmore,  Barney Wilson, the anonymous among us, and those listed elsewhere in this edition of the Treasure Chest. To all of you who do the real “walk” and work on our road of caring go our deep appreciation and respect; thanks!

(Treasure Chest editor’s note from me, Mardie Oberle, to apologize if you’re not mentioned herein and should have been, and to thank a new island friend, John Newmeyer, for his ideas for future issues).

A dear friend and north-end Treasure Island neighbor for decades here, Genevieve Weston, quietly passed away this July.

To her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Sharon Weston, her grandchildren and family go special thoughts during this difficult time.

Genevieve’s beautiful flowers in front of her home always brought to mind the elegant and lovely lady inside; and her bountiful gladioli will continue to color Treasure for us.

Thanks, Genevieve, for the difference you made.

WEBSITE INFORMATION

The Treasure Island website (treasureislandcc.org/) has a year’s worth of board minutes posted for us to check on line.   They are posted soon after each meeting and are easy to find them as well as other updates from the board. You will also find our Treasure Chest newsletter posted as well.  So special thanks to our webmaster, Rod Wilkinson!  Please let Rod know if you have additional interesting photos of Treasure Island that he can add to the website for us all to enjoy.  This is another place and way for us to stay in touch with our island.  Rod tells us that the links to e-mail us back are on  the bottom of each web page.  And don’t forget the webcam at Fair Harbor Marina (http://www.fairharbormarina.us/x60.xml).  The camera pans our Island dock every 15 minutes and lets us watch our boats, tides and maybe your kids too.

NOTICES

Labor Day Weekend, August 30th there’ll be a dance at the Fire Hall which is sponsored  by the Grapeview Community Club and open to everyone.  From 8pm to midnight, there’ll be live music and room to dance, or just listen; and for your $40 per person you’ll also get a delicious supper with this great, summer-end neighborhood activity.  Tickets will be sold at the door (but no doubt an rsvp and early check to Jackie Longmire for “pre-sales” would be appreciated) and YOU’RE GONNA HAVE A GREAT TIME – GO!!

The “terrific” (says Karen) travel trailer which is parked on our north end “inside” is for sale.  She or husband Mark Weber will be happy to hear from you if you’re interested, so please phone them at 206/542-8850.

Margaret Chessum suffered a stroke in June and would surely love to hear from you.  She is now in the Firlane Nursing Home in Shelton, and cards or notes are easily sent with her husband, George.  To you both, we’re thinking about and wishing you well.

Many happy returns to Milicent Poole of 930 East who recently spent her 95th birthday here with her son, Daniel, of 921 East.

NOW IT’S YOUR TURN

Speaking of notices, we surely have other neighbors here who have interesting Treasure Island experiences worth sharing.  Some of us may also keep records, diaries, journals,  etc. containing observations about  Treasure Island…..Even old family photos may have interesting details. Please pass along information about special times to the Treasure Chest and the island website to share with all of us.  Some people, for example, note weather, fishing and/or garden information regularly on their calendars; and there’s treasure to mine for the sharing.  This could become the Treasure lore of famous storms, accidents, funny fishing experiences and interesting observations for the rest of us.

CRITTERS  FOUND NOW VACATIONING HERE

         AND  “IN RESIDENCE” ON TREASURE

-        A new and smaller rabbit has been seen in the same NW island area and is thought to be a new friend to a slightly older, courageous little rabbit already living in that area (since before Xmas?).  The smaller and perhaps younger is also the same general brownish color with furry cottontail as his fitter and bigger friend.

-        Raccoons are still being fed by more than one household here; so please remember that they’re a wild animal and so need to be respected.  While they don’t normally carry rabies in this area, it’s still a good idea to check with a doctor if someone or a pet is bitten.

-        Lots of healthy birds are regularly visiting and passing through.  One birder’s current island bird list, (meaning the number of different bird species identified from observing them from points on Treasure) includes over 100 different bird species compiled during just these last few years.  If you keep such lists, formally or not, please pass along your notes when you can to help build a master bird list.  Thanks.
