Monday, January 16th was another bridge closure day
for pouring three more piers. The temperature was 28 degrees at 8:00
am. At 9:00 am the temperature came up above freezing, but a short
snow storm passed through and the wind picked up from the south across
the bridge. The bad weather slowed everything down a bit.
Piers 8, 9, and 10 were poured today. Pier 9 is
considered the "center" of the bridge and has been designed as an
expansion joint. It was distinguishable from the others by the lack of
the coated green rebar extending above the pile forms. Instead, this
pier has special provisions for the expansion joint. This brings the
total number of pier caps completed to 9. Only 6 more piers to go! The
Ironworkers are busy getting the next 3 ready to be formed and poured
next week. The bridge was re-opened to traffic at 4:10 pm.
