Pouring Pile Caps 2, 3, and 4

On Thursday,
December 29th, the pile caps at Piers 2, 3 and 4 were poured. This
week's pour required approximately 44 cubic yards, which is less
concrete than the previous pour because only 2 piles, the south and
center pile, on each pier could be poured. The other pile on each pier
(north) is under the existing bridge and will be formed and poured
once the south driving lane is complete and the old bridge is removed.

At the same time as
the forms were being built for this week's pour, Piers 5, 6, and 7
form sections were being removed and the pile caps were being
finished. The steel form ties that hold the forms in place protrude
about 8 inches from the face of the pile cap. These snap ties run
through the concrete pile cap and tie the east and west forms together
while resisting the weight of the wet concrete. After the form
sections are removed, the rods will be snapped off and the hole filled
in. The forms that were removed will be reused at the next set of pile
caps that will be formed and poured.
