American Construction
set up their construction trailers on the mainland on September 29th, 2011, and
started building the detour on that end of the bridge.
The purpose for building
the detour is to allow
continued access to Treasure Island while the west abutment is being built. The
detour will
prevent an excessively long bridge closure. (Up to a 30-day closure was
discussed.)
The detour was started first because the steel piles for our
bridge were late in
arriving from the overseas manufacturer in China. Some of the shorter piles arrived on
time, but not enough to bring the barge up and start driving piles in earnest.

On October 19th the bridge was
closed from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm to allow Public Utilities
District #3 to relocate their power lines for the detour. Island
residents also experienced a short power outage.

Link, PUD, and WaveCable) relocated for the detour
