Using the Old to Build the New

Building the New Bridge | Construction Begins on the Detour >

During the construction, there have been several short closures Monday through Friday, throughout the day, and several longer closures. We can expect them to continue throughout the entire bridge construction project, which is scheduled to be complete in May 2012. The deck of our existing bridge will be used to help build the new bridge. The surveyors marked the location of the new piles on the bridge deck; it is also the access between the crews building the pile caps and the American Construction offices and construction yard on the mainland.

Our bridge deck will be used to support the concrete trucks that will pour the new pile caps. This will last for five weeks with at least one day per week being an extended closure day. The old bridge will be used again to help build the driving lane on the south side of the new bridge. Once the driving lane on the south side of the bridge is built, the new driving lane will be used for access to the island. The south driving lane will also be used to complete the north portion of the bridge driving lane.
